Have you been told that you have a cavity that needs to be filled? Cavities take time to develop. They start small and grow over time if they’re not properly treated. At Manchester Dental Group in Manchester, VT, we have many ways of treating cavities.
Cavities are diagnosed when patients come in with toothaches or during their regular checkups. Detecting a cavity during a checkup is better because these cavities are usually smaller and easier to treat. Fillings, inlays, onlays, and crowns are all things we use to treat cavities of different sizes at Manchester Dental Group.
Patients might be told they have cavities during their checkups or while visiting the dentist for other reasons. Cavities are things we see almost every day and shouldn’t be a cause for worry or stress. Patients might be asked for a dental x-ray. Sometimes cavities end up being deeper or larger than they seem on examination. X-rays are great for telling us how deep they are and the actual size.
The first step of treating a cavity is to clean it and remove all the infected tissue. Next, the cavity will need to be filled. This is usually done using fillings. Inlays are used to treat slightly larger cavities. Inlays occupy cavities and extend to the biting surfaces of teeth without covering them.
Larger cavities can’t be treated with fillings or inlays. They need onlays or crowns. These are also placed after cleaning and sterilizing the cavity. Onlays can be thought of as larger inlays. They fill the cavity and extend to the biting surface while covering part of it.
Crowns take things a step further. They cover most of or all the biting surface of a tooth. What method of treatment you get is mostly determined on the size of the cavity. It would be wasteful and unnecessary to treat a small cavity with an onlay or a crown.
