What is gum disease?

Gum disease is the term used to describe an infection that occurs in the tissues around your teeth. This is when your gums become inflamed and infected because of plaque. Plaque is caused by a bunch of bacteria that forms a film that sticks to your teeth and hardens. This can irritate your gums, causing them to become inflamed.

In the early stages, this condition is called gingivitis. If it is not addressed, gingivitis will advance into gum disease. With good preventive dental care, you can avoid gum disease.
